CYTOGENETIC ANALYSIS FOR NEOPLASTIC DISORDERS

Cytogenetic testing for neoplastic disorders is performed to identify acquired chromosome anomalies in malignancies and is a useful diagnostic tool for assisting in the diagnosis and classification of certain malignancies including hematological disorders. The findings of the cytogenetic analysis are also used to evaluate prognosis and to monitor the effects of treatment and remission in patients.

ONCOLOGY (KARYOTYPING, FISH AND CGH)
Specimen Types Requirements Turnaround times
Bone marrow or Blood 3cc of Bone marrow or peripheral blood in a sodium heparin tube (green top) Do not use lithium heparin tubes 8-10 days
Solid neoplastic tissue 1 cm3 biopsy sample (a smaller piece will be used if this is not possible) should be obtained in an aseptic manner using sterile instruments and placed in a sterile tube or container with physiological saline or balanced salt solution to keep the sample moist.
DO NOT PLACE TISSUES IN FORMALIN OR WATER
2-4 weeks
